US Social Forum organizing website goes live during World Social Forum 10th Anniversary. Organizers say the potential of the Social Forum will be realized by the imagination and creativity of its participants. Click here to register yourself and/or organization.
Ten years following the founding of the World Social Forum, The United States Social Forum's organizing website goes live today, marking an important milestone for the self-organized democratic forum and open space for progressive civil society and social movements.
The Supreme Court's recent decision to expand corporate influence on
the democratic process should help to galvanize the over 20,000
changemakers expected to gather in Detroit
the week of June 22-26 from all different progressive sectors and
communities to share vision, strategy, practice, and action for a more
democratic future.
The site, USSF2010.org, is
designed to allow forum participants to register and shape the week's
activities, cultural events, demonstrations and workshops.
"If you believe in change, now is the time and Detroit is the place to
make it happen," says Akudo Ejelonu, USSF field organizer.
People and organizations can start registering for the Social Forum now
(registration rates for individuals and groups available on the registration page). Early registration runs until May 1, 2010.
According to the site, the Social Forum is not an event or an
organization. It is a "self-organized democracy building process made
by people like you, and your involvement can begin right now," says
Ejelonu. The site and organizers encourage participants to organize
"Info Sessions" and "People's Movement Assemblies"
for organizations and community groups, to sponsor attendees, to join a
local or national working group, to plan a work brigade to Detroit, or
to submit a workshop proposal for the Forum - the substance of the
Forum, in other words, is determined by the participants. "The
potential of the Social Forum is only limited by the imagination and
creativity of its participants," added Ejelonu.
Organizers also say that the USSF will provide space to build
relationships, learn from each others' experiences, share stories and
analysis of the problems our communities face, and bring renewed
insight and inspiration. "It will help develop the leadership,
consciousness, vision, and strategy needed to realize another world,"
says B. Loewe, USSF field organizer.
"Our heroes were our age when they did the things we look up to now,"
added B. Loewe. "And if our generation is going make the impact we want
to see, now is the moment and the social forum is the place to make
history."
